UN Gives Nigeria Deadline to Strengthen Judiciary, Pass Whistle-blowers Bill

The United Nations has given Nigeria a deadline to combat corruption, ensure the independence of the judiciary and pass the whistle-blowers bill prepared by the Bukola Saraki led 8th Senate into law.
The UN Human Rights Committee, established under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights has expressed concern about: “Pervasive corruption, including in the oil and security sectors and in the judiciary and the non-passing of whistle-blowers bill.”
Nigeria has ratified the Covenant. The Committee recommended that the Federal Government should:
1. Combat corruption and promote good governance and transparency
2. Strengthen the independence of the judiciary.
Nigerian has until 26 July, 2021 to report on progress.
