ABUJA-Following the incessant high instances of electoral offences in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a fine of 5 hundred thousand naira or three years imprisonment or each for individuals convicted of vote buying and promoting, naija news live reports.

Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu disclosed made the disclosure on the ninth Forum of the Anti-Corruption Scenario Room, organised by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) held in Abuja on Wednesday.

Represented on the occasion by the INEC Nationwide Commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Training, Festus Okoye, Mahmood stated decried the embarrassment the commission has needed to face from international group. He urged the National Assembly to evolve new legislations to curb the ugly development.

The chairman also appealed to the parliament to expedite motion on the Electoral Offences Commission Invoice, underscoring the necessity for a separate agency to be given the accountability of investigating and prosecuting electoral offences and offenders. He stated: “The National Assembly ought to isolate vote buying and promoting and correctly outline it, it varieties and elements and make it a separate item in the Electoral Act and supply sanction for violation.

“The punishment for vote buying ought to be elevated and made stiffer to act ad deterrent to patrons and sellers. People who commit the offence of buying and promoting ought to be made to pay a tremendous of N500,000 or be subjected to 3 years imprisonment or both.
