CCT Convicts Former CJN, Walter Onnoghen

The Code of Conduct Tribunal today delivers judgement on the case involving former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen and the Federal Government of Nigeria over non declaration of assets

The Former CJN was charged with the case of non declaration of assets.

The Tribunal has come to the conclusion that the defendant has falsely declared his asset by failing to declare those five accounts listed on the charge sheet.

The Tribunal Chairman, Danladi Umar, asked the defence team if it has any thing to say, following which the team and ex-CJN Onnoghen answered in the negative.

He has been convicted.

He is removed from office as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and as the Chairman of the Nigeria Judicial Council. He is further banned by the CCT from holding any public office for the next ten years.

The Tribunal Chairman further orders that all money in the account in question are seized and forfeited to the Federal Government, based on the fact that he failed to show the Tribunal how he acquired the money in the five accounts.

The accused counsel said the verdict was premeditated and does not follow the principle of the constitution. He vows to appeal the judgment.
